
Braised Beef
A classic Chinese braised dish featuring tender beef slow-cooked in a fragrant soy-based broth, perfect for both hot and cold serving.

Ingredients
- 1 lb beef shank
- 3 slices ginger
- 2 cloves garlic (crushed)
- 2 stalks green onions (cut into sections)
- 1 star anise
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 dried chili peppers (optional)
- 3 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cooking wine
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4 cups water
Steps
- Blanch beef shank in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a pot, sauté ginger slices, garlic, green onions, star anise, cinnamon stick, and dried chili peppers (if using) until fragrant.
- Add beef, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, cooking wine, sugar, and salt. Stir to combine.
- Pour in water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5-2 hours until beef is tender.
- Remove beef, let cool slightly, then slice. Serve with braising liquid.
Tips
The key to tender braised beef is low and slow cooking. The braising liquid can be saved and reused for other dishes.
